SUMMARY:Webinar with Silke Riegler | “Engaging presentations – Check!“
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nWhy are so many presentations soporific rather than stunning? \nWhy do most presentations leave the audience disappointed while the presenter feels dispirited by the listeners’ feedback? The key to an engaging presentation lies in meticulous preparation! In my talk\, I will present an easy to follow checklist that supports your business clients in the preparation stage of their presentations. It reflects a pragmatic 9-step process that ensures your clients’ success. \nBio \nSilke Riegler is a business communications and intercultural trainer based in Germany. An eclectic mix of students gives her the possibility to draw on her business experience and training\, as well as on her passion for the English language and culture.

SUMMARY:Call for Papers: Joint AELFE-LSPPC International Conference
DESCRIPTION:This joint international conference brings together the 21st annual conference of the European Association of Languages for Specific Purposes (AELFE2023) and the 7th Conference of the Asia-Pacific LSP & Professional Communication Association (LSPPC7). Both associations promote the use of languages for specific purposes and professional communication. The main goal of this joint conference is to create a meeting point for scholars (researchers and practitioners) and allow them to discuss and exchange their views on the conference theme with participants from different world regions and do so from multi- and inter-disciplinary perspectives. \nThe Association’s 2023 conference (LSPPC7) will be organized by the University of Zaragoza\, Spain as a joint conference with the European Association of Languages for Specific Purposes (AELFE). Here are a few specifics (much more information is available on the conference website: https://aelfe-lsppcconference2023.com/): \n\nDates: June 28-30\, 2023\nVenue: Zaragoza\, Spain\nDeadline for abstracts: January 15\, 2023\n\nCall for papers \nIn a networked era\, we are witnessing rapidly changing\, web-mediated communication practices involving a variety of communicative purposes\, audiences\, modes and media. Emerging trends in disciplinary knowledge communication such as the Open Science paradigm attest to this fact. Academic and professional communication today thus poses important theoretical\, methodological and pedagogical challenges that need addressing. Some of the questions that we aim to address are: What is the role of LSP teaching and research in an increasingly interconnected world? What methods and frameworks are suitable to investigate multilingual and multimodal communication online? How can practitioners support emerging digital communication needs in the professions? How can they best prepare future graduates and professionals to disseminate their work in digital environments?\, and how can LSP research and practice help them develop the necessary literacies (academic\, plurilingual and digital literacies)? \nWe have a terrific line-up of plenary and featured speakers\, including: \n\nChristine B. Feak (University of Michigan\, US)\nEric Friginal (The Hong Kong Polytechnic University)\nLaura M. Muresan (Bucharest University of Economic Studies\, Romania)\nChristine Tardy (Northern Arizona University\, US)\nVijay Bhatia (The Chinese University of Hong Kong)\nJohn Swales (University of Michigan\, US)\n\nThis joint international conference brings together the 21st annual conference of the European Association of Languages for Specific Purposes (AELFE2023) and the 7th Conference of the Asia-Pacific LSP & Professional Communication Association (LSPPC7). Both associations promote the use of languages for specific purposes and professional communication. SUMMARY:Call for Digital Presentations - Second Language Multimodal Literacies (L2ML) Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Building on the Digital Literacies Project and the associated Second Language Digital Literacies Symposium (L2DL) hosted by the Center for Educational Resources in Culture\, Language and Literacy (CERCLL)\, the L2ML symposium will bring together educators\, practitioners\, and researchers\, who share common interests in exploring the role of multimodality in contexts of second or multiple language and culture learning. This free\, two-day virtual event will include a series of digital presentations and discussions\, including three invited talks by experts in the fields of multimodal language and literacy education. The symposium will culminate in a panel discussion\, where participants will consider future directions for multimodal scholarship and pedagogical practice in second language and multilingualism studies. \n\n  \nResearch studies\, theoretical think pieces\, and exemplary practices are all equally welcome. We particularly encourage contributions that respond to the following guiding questions: \n\nWhat models\, frameworks\, and concepts shape current understandings of multimodality and its potential roles in the learning of second or additional languages? What are the benefits and limits of different ways of understanding second language multimodal literacies?\nHow can educators best integrate and acknowledge multimodal dimensions of languaging and language learning? What findings and new directions does current research offer us for answering this question?\nWhat modalities have been underrepresented in second language education and what possible roles might they play?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCall for Proposals\nProposals for virtual presentations must be submitted using the online submission form by the submission deadline of January 6\, 2023.  The form opened to accept submissions on October 3\, 2022. \n\n\n  \n\n\nSubmissions will require a title (10 words maximum)\, summary (50 words maximum)\, and abstract (350 words maximum) describing your proposed presentation and including the key theoretical/academic references on which your presentation is based. Citations are included in the word count; bibliographic details for all citations are required\, but are not included in the word count. Proposals are reviewed blind\, so abstracts should not include identifying information. \nAuthors may submit no more than two proposals\, and they may be primary presenter on only one of those. A submission must have one primary author\, and can have up to three additional  authors. For all authors\, the following information is required for the submission form: name\, title\, institution\, email address\, state (if in the US)\, and country. \n\n\n  \n\n\nThe acceptance status emails will be sent by February 20\, 2023. Complete digital presentations will be due on April 7\, 2023.

SUMMARY:Call for Papers - 44th Groupe d'Etude et de Recherche en Anglais de Spécialité (GERAS) Conference
DESCRIPTION:The 44th international GERAS colloquium\, organized at ENS Paris-Saclay on March 23\, 24 and 25\, 2023\, will focus on culture\, memories\, and legacies in specialized English. \nSend communication proposals to email hidden; JavaScript is required before December 16\, 2022. \nWord or Open Office format desired. \nNotifications of acceptance will be sent to authors before January 27\, 2023. \n\nWe welcome communication proposals in the form of abstracts (300 to 600 words) relating\, for example\, to the themes indicated below: \n\nEnglish-speaking backgrounds and specialist areas\n\nHow to characterize the cultures – considered as complex systems of values\, norms and representations ( Cuche 2004) – of English-speaking circles and specialized fields? Are these cultures at the origin of specific social or linguistic styles? What are the most appropriate conceptual frameworks to describe these cultural phenomena in specialized English? What are the inner workings of the interaction between language\, culture and memory in specialized English?\nAre English-speaking specialist circles and domains endowed with “collective memories”\, in the sense understood by the great sociologist Maurice Halbwachs in his work Les cadre sociale de la mémoire (1925)? What would be the language manifestations of these memories in specialized texts and discourses\, and how to grasp them as a scientific object in specialized English?\nAre ethnographic approaches in specialized English (Wozniak 2019) able to grasp the constituent elements and symbolic systems of human groups assembled around a common social function \, namely their “common ancestry\, real or supposed\, [the ] memories of a shared historical past\, [their] cultural focus on one or more symbolic elements defined as the embodiment of their collectivity” (Schermerhorn 1970: 12)?\n\n\nDiscourse Analysis\, Specialized Genres\, Professional Substrate Fiction (FASP )\n\nWhat would be the contours and lineaments of cultural and memorial elements in specialized discourses and genres? How do they manifest themselves concretely in the language\, style and rhetorical organization of the texts? How do they apply\, with a more or less pronounced degree of constraint\, older models\, potentially constituted as stylistic legacies?\nAre the notions of “discursive memory” (Courtine 1981)\, “interdiscursive memory” (Moirand 1999\, 2007) or even “prediscourse” (Paveau 2006\, 2008) relevant for characterizing specialized discourses and genres?\nWith regard to specialized genres\, should we pose with Jean Paul Bronckart (2004: 82) the hypothesis of the “pre-existence of genres of texts elaborated by previous generations\, organized in a repertoire of models”\, echoing the generic schemata what was John Swales already talking about in his book Gender Analysis (1990)? How do specialized discourse genres update earlier or preformulated generic conventions? In the end\, do genres only reproduce pre-established cultural and memory patterns\, or are there within them mechanisms for innovation and differentiation  ? How can the diachronic study of discourse genres shed light on the memory aspects and mechanisms they conceal?\nBy what ways and means does fiction with a professional substrate (FASP) provide access to the cultures\, memories and legacies of specialized English-speaking communities  ? What narrative and symbolic mechanisms does she use to represent them? In addition to the language and practices of specialized circles\, does the FASP also endeavor to stage specialized cultural or memorial substrates?\n\n\nDidactics and LANSAD sector\n\nIn language teaching\, we often speak of the teaching of a “language-culture”\, thus marking the inseparable nature of the language system and the culture to which it is invariably linked. How would the cultural dimension be essential in the LANSAD sector? What would be the strategies for teaching or making people discover the cultures of specialized circles? Sandrine Chapon (2011) had shown that English-language legal FASPs are part of the cultural landscape of French-speaking students\, and that their use as a teaching aid can facilitate access to the target culture of English-speaking legal circles. Would it be possible to extend and systematize this type of approach? Are there specialized professional cultures that are already or could be the subject of relevant and effective didactic training within the LANSAD sector  ?\nAre there\, within the LANSAD sector in France\, as pointed out by Gail Taillefer (2007)\, specific cultural and memorial specificities? In what way are they forces of progress\, or do they hinder certain advances that would be necessary? Are they challenges or opportunities?\nWhat is the place of memory mechanisms in the teaching and learning of specialized languages? Is it possible to model them and draw up an epistemologically credible portrait of them\, as Jean-Paul Narcy-Combes (2006) tried to do by describing two modes of memory functioning in language production and in learning tasks?\nThe didactics of languages and cultures has been traversed since the beginning of the 20th century by multiple methodological currents (direct or audio-oral methods\, then communicative and co-actional approaches in the more recent period\, for example) . A didactics of the language that would be specifically anchored in specialized English\, a perspective traced by Cédric Sarré and Shona Whyte (2016 )\, should it be part of\, or perhaps free itself from\, these major paradigms of teaching and learning? learning  ? What can we learn from the heritage of these schools of thought in language teaching? Is a right of inventory vis-à-vis them currently possible in French higher education?\n\n\nSpecialized Corpora\, Corpus Linguistics\n\n How can corpus linguistics detect and characterize the cultural and memory aspects of specialized corpora? Does the often ineffable and immaterial nature of cultures\, memories and heritages within specialized English-speaking communities hinder textometric approaches that would make it possible to trace their contours? Within specialized corpora\, what would be the possible distinctive marks of cultures and memories?\n\n\nTranslation studies and specialized translation\n\nHow does the translation of texts\, especially specialized documents\, imply a cultural transfer? Jacqueline Guillemin-Flescher (1994) had indicated that translators are often led to transfer from one national culture to another a form of spirit of the language\, that is to say a “collective stylistic” constituted around behaviors common cultures. In legal translation\, Claude Bocquet (2008) had also underlined the importance of cultural parameters. How is taking into account cultural and memorial dimensions relevant for translating specialized texts  ?\nTools for Taylorizing pragmatic and specialized translation\, “translation memories” symbolize the fact that translating often means activating statements that already exist in human communities to describe certain themes or label certain phenomena. Does the advent of artificial intelligences in translation\, and the displacement that these bring about in the professional positioning of translators (more and more revisers of machine translations)\, profoundly modify the place of discursive\, terminological and phraseological memory in translation ?\nDoes the history of pragmatic and specialized translation reveal particular cultures and traditions in the way of translating? How are today’s translators the repositories of older methodological and epistemological heritages? Are these legacies an unsurpassable horizon\, a pitfall or an asset?\n\n\nHistory and epistemology of research in specialized English\n\n\n\nAt a time when the GERAS community is gradually moving towards its 50th anniversary\, would it be relevant to exercise a right of inventory on the memory and legacies of the work of the French School of English? specialty? What retrospective look can we take on the scientific culture that we have forged together over time? How are we the guardians and heirs of the great voices and figures that have marked our history\, and built the epistemological frameworks that govern our reflections today?

SUMMARY:Webinar with Assoc. Prof. Esa Christine Hartmann | Intercultural Encounters in Translingual Picture Books: Literary and Pedagogical Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nBe it linguistic mediation\, metalinguistic awareness or a pedagogy of multiliteracies – many pedagogical aspects of intercultural learning in multilingual contexts of language acquisition can be explored through children’s literature and\, more specifically\, through multilingual picture books. \nThis webinar focuses on two translingual picture books that alternate between French and German throughout the narration and address up-to-date socio-political topics\, such as migration and global warming: Der Schrei. Le loup migrant by P. Seiler (German translation by S. Maurer) (2019) and Le voyage des ours polaires. Die Reise der Eisbären by T. Père and R. Panchyshyn (French and German translation by S. Maurer) (2017). \nDue to their high aesthetic and cultural complexity\,  translingual picture books represent an inspiring text type for language teaching and learning at all levels and are suitable for young emergent bilinguals as well as adult additional language learners who take an interest in multilingual literature. This text type is also highly interesting for teachers\, educators\, professors\, and parents in any bilingual or multilingual context. \nThe literary and pedagogical analysis of these works of art allows us to discuss how translingual picture books can foster integrated\, multimodal\, and translingual learning as well as the development of biliteracy and intercultural competence. \nBio \nDr Esa Christine Hartmann is an associate professor of German\, Comparative Literature\, and Bilingual Education at the University of Strasbourg (France) and a member of the research group on Multilingualism\, Translation and Creation of the ITEM (Institut des Textes et Manuscrits Modernes) at CNRS (Centre National de Recherche Scientifique\, Paris). Her main research interests include multilingual picture books\, multilingual writing\, genetic translation studies\, collaborative translation\, poetics\, and stylistics.

SUMMARY:Webinar with Dr. Ursula Stickler | After COVID: How Online Language Teaching Has Changed the Profession
DESCRIPTION:Abstract  \nEven before the enforced move to online teaching many language professionals were using digital tools and online communication in their work and their research (Shi & Stickler\, 2019). Due to COVID restrictions many teachers were forced into what Hodges and colleagues (2020) called Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT). This change in practice has had an impact on language teachers’ views of their own profession. Looking beyond the immediately obvious changes such as increased confidence in digital skills\, realisation of a change in role\, it has also brought home to many teachers that online communication is fundamentally different from face-to-face or classroom-based teaching. This implies a need for a change in epistemology\, a recognition that the way we “know” is changing in the absence of physical proximity. \nThis talk will present views of language teachers about the future of their profession (Stickler\, 2022)\, and some ideas about the change in an epistemological stance needed for successful online language teaching. \nHodges\, C. Cambridge (Cambridge University Press). \nBio \nDr Ursula Stickler is Senior Lecturer in German in the School of Languages and Applied Linguistics at the Open University (UK). Her research centres around online and independent language learning\, teacher training and the use of new and qualitative methods in online learning research. She is expert consultant with the European Centre for Modern Languages (ECML) and co-editor of the book series “Developing Online Language Pedagogies” with Castledown publishers.

SUMMARY:CATAPULT Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The CATAPULT Symposium will take place on 25 August 2021 in Paris and online (hybrid event – epidemiological situation permitting\, if not it will become a fully online event). This one-day final conference will mark the end of the project. This event will give us the opportunity to (1) present the work done during the project’s lifetime\, (2) give some of the end-users (MOOC participants\, CoP platform users…) a chance to share their views on the resources and tools developed\, and (3) discuss the future of the CATAPULT resources and tools and\, more generally\, future directions in LSP Teacher Education.

SUMMARY:AELFE-TAPP 2021 Conference
DESCRIPTION:This joint AELFE-TAPP Conference brings together the 19th annual conference of AELFE (Asociación Europea de Lenguas para Fines Específicos/European Association of Languages for Specific Purposes) and the 2nd Conference of the Trans-Atlantic and Pacific Project (TAPP)\, a growing virtual exchange network that has developed transnational collaborative projects on specialised communication\, translation and user experience. The combination of both conferences will allow participants to link the fields of languages for specific purposes (LSP) and telecollaboration/virtual exchange. \nThe annual AELFE Conference is a meeting point for scholars interested in academic and professional communication from a multidisciplinary perspective. \nThe first TAPP conference was held in Fargo (ND\, USA) in 2016\, under the theme “Converging fields”. This second edition\, “Expanding networks”\, will explore virtual exchange from the perspective of its consolidation and will provide a forum for researchers and practitioners from different networks to share their experience and insights. \nIn a networked era\, we are faced with the challenges of faster and more complex communication involving a variety of languages\, participants and modes.  Academic and professional communication also poses challenges related to disciplinary literacies and interdisciplinary collaboration. As higher education is undergoing a process of increased internationalization\, especially through English-medium instruction (EMI) and internationalization at home and abroad\, we ask: What is the role of LSP teaching and research? How can academics expand their international and multidisciplinary networks? How can educators best prepare future graduates for complex multilingual and multicultural work and study environments? \nWith an emphasis on the demands of international academic and professional language use as well as on the opportunities afforded by technology for collaboration and intercultural communication\, the AELFE-TAPP 2021 Conference will provide scholars with the opportunity to discuss advances in academic and professional communication as well as in virtual exchange. \nTogether with an inspiring academic programme\, participants will also enjoy a social programme in a privileged location\, Vilanova i la Geltrú (Barcelona)\, which will offer participants plenty of opportunities to strengthen their academic and social networks.
